Gummy Bears - Oh those cute little bears are so flavorful.

History of Gummy Bears.

The Gummy Bear originates from Germany where it is hugely popular under the name Gummibär ("rubber bear"). The German company Haribo from Bonn first produced bear-shaped sweets in 1922 and introduced its Gold-Bear product in the 1960s. The success of Gummy Bears has spawned many gummy animals and objects: worms, frogs, hamburgers, cherries, cola bottles, sharks, apples, oranges, and even gummy ampelmenn. Many knockoff gummy bears are available on the market. Trolli is a well-known knockoff gummy candy manufacturer and was the first to introduce "gummi worms" in 1981.

Ingredients

The traditional Gummy Bear is made from sugar, glucose syrup, starch, flavouring, food coloring, citric acid, and gelatin. There are also some types of Gummy Bears made with pectin instead of gelatin, making them suitable for vegans.

Depending on the production method, it may be similar to the British confectionery Jelly Babies.

Large sour bears are larger and flatter than Gummy Bears, have a softer texture, and include fumaric acid or other acid ingredients to produce a sour flavor. Some manufacturers produce sour bears with a different texture, based on starch instead of gelatin.

Health issues

Gummy bears ordinarily contain mostly empty calories, but recently gummy bears containing vitamin C, produced by manufacturers such as Bear Essentials[1], are being marketed towards parents of young children. Multivitamins have also been produced in the form of gummy bears.

Gummy bears, and other gummy candy, stick to teeth and may cause tooth decay.[2]. However, gummy bears containing the cavity-fighting additive xylitol are now being tested.[3].

Gelatin, a key ingredient in most gummy bears, is produced from the bones of cattle and may harbor harmful prions. Prions are misshapen proteins that can cause mad cow disease in cattle and variant CJD in humans, and are not destroyed when cooked.

Cartoon series

In the 1980s Disney produced a cartoon series called Adventures of the Gummi Bears. However, the bears on this show share no resemblance with the candy Gummy Bears.

Feature films

In the final scene of the feature film Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), a girl on a schoolbus offers a gummy bear to her downtrodden principal Mr. Rooney:

"Want a gummy bear? They've been in my pocket all day. They're real warm and soft..."

In the 2001 film, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, American Gummy Bears are used to represent power, as well as that of a dramatic change over Gummibär and the East Berlin lifestyle. The scene in this musical leads up to the song, "Sugar Daddy."

In the film Jack, Robin Williams' character (who has a disease that causes rapid ageing), offers gummy bears to his teacher, played by Jennifer Lopez. She accepts the red ones.

In restaurants

At the end of a meal at Michaelangelo's Restaurant Cafe in San Francisco, guests are treated to a novel albeit unsanitary treat—a communal bowl of gummy bears.

Breast implants

The consistency of gummy bears has been proposed as ideal for breast implants. "Gummy Bear breast implants" have been on the market since 2005.

A physician, an engineer and a lawyer were arguing about whose profession was the oldest. The surgeon announced, "Remember how God removed a rib from Adam to create Eve? Obviously, medicine is the oldest profession."

The engineer replied, "But before that, God created the heavens and the earth from chaos, in less than a week. You have to admit that was a remarkable feat of engineering, and that makes engineering an older profession than medicine."

The lawyer smirked, and said, "Who do you think created the chaos?"

My family and I had just come back from our Raya break yesterday. After five days being away, with no computer, everyone was eye-balling the computer. But who had the use of it first?? Yes, you are right, the boss (the head of the household). I had to wake up early this morning just to make sure I can have the use of this computer.

The Bloggers Meeting (dalam intonasi Doraemon).......... my version

The meeting was the highlight of my Hari Raya. As I have commented at drroza's site, meeting everyone there was like meeting long lost friends. And they are no ordinary friends here. They are people you have come to know from their entries, people who have actually shared their inner thoughts, views and opinions, likes and dislikes... So it is like you have already known them for months or years. But meeting pycno for the 'first' time is something else..............

I could see that he had put in so much effort in this gathering - the food, presentation, the overall ambience and the way he entertained his guests deserved an A grade.   But I could see that he was all flustered when he was giving his short introductory speech. I think I can understand because all eyes were on him. Guess he did not realise that we were all as nervous as him if not more.

Why... you are sooo sweet and demure, you crowd-puller you.   You look every inch of a good doctor and believe me you guys, you'd be blessed to be treated by this good doctor. Now I understand why your patients love you so much, to the extent that you get rambutans and all during the fruit seasons.

You still look a wee bit exhausted.... possibly you have not fully recovered from your Pakistan trip?? You and drroza are a perfect ideal couple, blessed with beautiful good-looking and intelligent children.

I can immediately see the leader in you. With your background, you have no problem at all in striking out a conversation and get very much engaged in discussions.   But I particularly like when you say that there are no right or wrong answers.   No wonder people can easily open up to you ....... like pycno has (I can sense that something you have said triggered him to organise this gathering).

I could see that he was very nervous and tongue-tied initially, despite having his parents there. Maybe he was expecting his mother to hold his hands? But drroza managed to break the ice with him and make him feel more comfortable. He is like what he has described about himself in his entries - extrovert in his entries but an introvert in person. Hiyoshi, my advice to you is, first impression counts. You cannot take too long a time to warm up. Kalau jadi doktor nanti, you are going to lose patients if they misinterpret you for being sombong.

Poor maman, tak ada rakan sebaya. But I could see that he did have a good time watching tv and poking fun with his siblings.

All in all, it was great fun. I was made to understand that hiring 'the secretary' costs pycno a hand and a leg. Dia kena belanja makan and also buy story books at Borders. You know lah books there are so expensive.

I know that I want to meet all of you again.......so please, the rest of you who were not here. Try not to miss the next meeting?? Next Raya ke Nurelhuda?

TUJUH

Ketujuh-tujuh ini ku tujukan khas untuk drroza dan pycnogenol. Minta maaf kerana mengambil masa yang terlalu lama untuk memikirkan apa yang boleh dan tidak boleh ku luah dan ceritakan di sini.

Seven things I plan to do, insha'Allah:

(1) Be a good Muslimah, like Ayumi. I really admire you.
(2) Make the house presentable for Raya.
(3) Eat healthy food.
(4) Post entries at my site regularly. ( I keep telling myself this ALL the time)
(5) Start exercising (Lepas Raya, kot...)
(6) Control my temper.
(7) Get myself a new car. (bila agak nya ye??)

Seven things I can do, subhan'Allah:

(1) I can knit crochet, tatting, cross-stitch, but I cannot sew (strange kan?)
(2) Work better under pressure. Can that be the reason why I'm having hypertension?
(3) I can make someone I hate appear "invisible", even though he/she may be right in front of me, and not feel guilty at all.
(4) I can see the world through telenovella.
(5) I can really SCREAM and SHOUT !!
(6) I make very good cream caramel. Drroza and pycno - you'll love me just for this!!
(7) I can cook too, but more often than not, lazy and too tired-lah.....

Seven things I can't do, astaghfirullah:

(1) I am not like other ladies, I dont like shopping.
(2) Am not that good at making entries in my blog (unlike drroza and pycnogenol), but I sure LOVE reading ALL of your entries.
(3) Cant stand hypocrisy.
(4) Cannot pretend. You will know if I love or hate you.
(5) Cannot see horror movies.
(6) Sorry kenakelayan, I cannot belly-dance, either!!
(7) You're not going to like me pycno.....I have difficulty waking up in the morning!

7 things that scare me:

(1) A watery death - that's why I cannot swim, I guess.
(2) A stab in the back, so if I can have a 'third eye', I want to have that placed at my back.
(3) In-laws. Does that mean that I have them?? Shudder !!
(4) Snakes.
(5) Evil kneivel wannabes on the road
(6)   Carelessness of our youths.
(7)   My ending.

7 random facts about me:

(1) I am the youngest of the three siblings. I have an elder brother who I cannot stand, and an elder sister who likes to verify and clarify EVERYTHING.
(2) I did my basic degree down under many, many years ago.
(3) People keep asking if I am related to Ida Nerina. Am I?? That's for me to know and for you to find out.
(4) I am down to earth and am not a materialistic person. (Beruntung siapa yang dapat ye?? dah laa pandai menyulam.......)
(5) I am a night person. Can that be the reason why I find it hard waking up in the morning?? (dah tak beruntung pula siapa yang dapat aku ;(
(6) My ambition when I was in the Primary School was to become a Minah Kilang. Dont you dare laugh...but I found it so, so, so fascinating to see all those moving objects down the conveyor belt.......silly kan??   :)))
(7) Of course I am not a Minah Kilang now. In fact, I am doing something respectable and honourable and it gives me great satisfaction.

When is the 1st of Ramadhan?? I know it's next week, but when are they going for the sighting of the new moon, exactly?

Just like all of you, I'm really looking forward to the fasting month. It's that time of the year when I would start reflecting on myself (ibadah wise) whether the last eleven or twelve months have been any better than the previous dozen of months.

I have a confession to make here. I have never been happy with my personal performance (ibadah wise) It's like I keep promising myself that I will be a better Muslim after undergoing the training the whole of Ramadhan. I always feel charged during the fasting month, and in Syawal, I'd feel just like a car that has undergone full, complete service. The engine still feel good the following few months. But, why oh why, come Rejab and Shaaban, I always feel like as if the engine is making all these creaking sound and begging to be serviced all over again. The feeling is that I have not really been taking good care of the engine. Understandably, therefore, the frustration, anger and guilt feelings.

Guess it's true that Ramadhan is full of Rahmah and Barakah. I can personally feel the spiritual rejuvenation taking place, each Ramadhan. It's just like the feeling that you get when you go to the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah, either for Hajj or Umrah. You go to surrender your sinned self and come back feeling good and cleansed.

So, Ramadhan I come to you full of dirt and feeling so guilty. Please shower me with your blessings and love.

Reading pycnogenol's short entry on how he's feeling blue gave me the inspiration to change my own background colour.

If he's feeling blue, then I'm in the pink of health ;)

I know a few who'll be red-eyed come tomorrow (read: drroza, ikelah and of course, our own dear iFos). Well, at least we have colours here: blue, pink and red. Anybody green with envy?

To be honest, I feel quite sad too and was visiting iFos' site everday, hoping that she would post a new entry before she leaves. Any chance of us all having the pleasure before you take that flight to Russia?

And ikelah, will we get to see another non-breathing pose form the red tee? I hope this time, you'll bring a big tank of oxygen for the poor fellow. He'll be needing it.

p.s. Sorry guys. I'm just trying to cheer those who are feeling blue - and perhaps red also. Can I go to the airport too?

I was talking to my friend over a cup of coffee after a meeting this afternoon, when she was complaining about the haze. She said she finds difficulty in breathing and feels tightness in her chest. Suddenly she said, "This is all "bala" from Allah!!!" Her words gave me a jolt like a hundred voltage of electricity. Then I suddenly recalled a newspaper article that I read on a colleague's noticeboard entitled "Punca Allah Turunkan Bencana". I would like to share it with you:-

"Dalam satu hadis Nabi Muhammad SAW ada menerangkan mengapa manusia ditimpa bencana. Dalam hadis diriwayatkan at-Tirmizi daripada Ali bin Abu Talib, Rasulullah bersabda, yang bermaksud:

'Apabila umatku melakukan 15 perkara berikut, maka layaklah mereka ditimpa bencana, iaitu:-

1. Apabila harta yang dirampas (daripada peperangan) diagih-agihkan kepada orang tertentu sahaja.

2. Apabila zakat dikeluarkan kerana menebus kesalahan (terpaksa).

3. Apabila sesuatu yang diamanahkan menjadi milik sendiri.

4. Apabila suami terlalu mentaati isteri.

5. Apabila anak menderhakai ibubapa masing-masing.

6. Apabila seseorang lebih memuliakan teman daripada ibubapa sendiri.

7. Apabila kedengaran banyak bunyi bising.

8. Apabla lebih ramai berbicara mengenai hal keduniaan dalam masjid.

9. Apabila sesuatu kaum itu daripada kalangan orang yang dihina oleh mereka.

10. Apabila memuliakan seseorang kerana takutkan tindakan buruknya.

11. Apabila arak menjadi minuman biasa.

12. Apabila lelaki memakai sutera.

13. Apabila perempuan dijemput menghibur lelaki.

14. Apabila wanita memainkan alat muzik.

15. Apabila orang yang terkemudian menghina orang yang terdahulu,

maka pada saat itu tunggulah bala yang akan menimpa dalam bentuk angin merah (puting beliung) atau gerak gempa yang maha dasyat atau tanaman yang tidak menjadi."

Let us take a little time to ponder whether we had contributed, in any way, to the bencana yang menimpa.............
